NRF Big Show Insights - Brazil and China: Emerging online retail powerhouses

NRF’s Big Show is in full-swing in New York and speakers are sharing insights into the emerging online retail powerhouses around the world. Zia Daniell Wigder of Forrester Research shared that global online retail hasn’t remotely reached its full potential.  Over the next three years Forrester expects online retail sales to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18% in Brazil, 20% in Mexico, 22% in China and 53% in India.  In comparison, the growth rates for the U.S. and Western Europe are 9% and 10%, respectively. 

According to Wigder, in both China and Brazil:

  • Online consumers across all age groups are shopping online, though on average skew younger than in the U.S. 
  • Most online buyers live in major metropolitan areas. 
  • Mobile penetration is very high in both markets – though using mobile phones to shop is not yet common practice.
