My experience with MotionPoint has been positive all around, I only have good things to say about MotionPoint.

How Translation Became Important

Mohawk College, a community college with approximately 15,000 students, wanted to diversify their student population. After doing some research, they determined translation was the easiest way to gain access to a broader range of global students.

They first noticed a spike in applications coming from Spanish speaking countries and Vietnam. As more international applications were submitted, Mohawk’s campus soon inherited an influx of new cultures, languages, and points of view.

“We quickly realized the value that international students bring in making our community rich and diverse. We recognized a need to do more translation and make our website accessible to students all over the world,” said Daniel Farr, Operations Manager for International Recruitment at Mohawk College.

The Challenge

Mohawk first tried translating their content with existing staff members that spoke different languages. However, upon reviewing the translations, they noticed conflicting ideas on how to translate the same material. It was evident that in-house translation wasn’t going to be a scalable solution.

After that, Mohawk tried using some lesser-known translation programs, but the translations still felt unnatural. Moreover, the translation program required a lot of manual effort and translation tasks began to burden Mohawk’s team.

Learning from how difficult website translation and localization can be, Mohawk College opted to meet with tenured translation and localization companies like MotionPoint. They required a partner that could handle all the heavy lifting without their team getting involved. A process much like MotionPoint’s Proxy Translation solution.

Outcome

MotionPoint’s professional translation localized Mohawk’s site quickly, without troubling internal resources with more work. MotionPoint ensured Mohawk that only professional translators—native in the languages they were translating into—would work on Mohawk’s content. MotionPoint also developed a glossary and style guide for Mohawk’s key terms to ensure brand consistency in every language.

“I was really impressed by the web technology, and the process of developing a glossary, and having us review the glossary and the opportunity to define key terms,” said Farr.

This helped resolve the translation quality issue. More importantly, with MotionPoint’s Proxy solution, all new content updates made to their English site are automatically collected and translated in about one business day. This automated the translation workflow relieved Mohawk’s team from having to constantly manage and maintain the translated experiences.

In the end, MotionPoint was able to launch their Spanish and Vietnamese websites in only 30 days. And after having success, Mohawk has asked MotionPoint to deliver three more languages: Chinese, Korean, and Portuguese!

“My favorite part about working with MotionPoint is the product and the customer service. The translation services are reliable and clear, our team rarely gets involved, and there is good follow-up when communicating with MotionPoint’s customer service,” said Farr.

“We’re excited to continue our partnership with Mohawk College,” states MotionPoint’s VP of Customer Operations, Jason Brick, “we’re committed to enriching their student body with international students from around the world.”
