3 Ways to Make Your Website Redesign Global-Ready

Hi, I’m Patrick Regan, an account executive at MotionPoint.

If you’re planning to redesign your website, and it will ultimately serve your global customers, here are three points to keep in mind.

1. Externalize text from images

Consider externalizing text from images. This will speed up turn around time for image translation, save money by eliminating graphics work, and improve search engine rankings for the terms within those images.

2. Plan for word growth

When translating from English phrases to other languages you can expect between 20-45% of word growth to occur. To account for this, as well as other misalignments, here are three things to consider: Create fully dynamic web pages. Allow for text wrap rather than text overflow. And if possible, leave breathing space within your images to account for that word growth.

3. Code for localization

Consider how you code your site as it relates to currency, dates and other formats that may apply in the U.S. but not in other markets. For instance, date formats and postal code formats vary from country to country.

Keep these points in mind during the early stages of a redesign. You can reduce complexity and ultimately save money when making your website international-ready.
